9/16/2023 0 Comments Mango season![]() The American shopper has finally embraced what the rest of the world has long known – mangoes are delicious and thus the most consumed fruit on the planet. Mango production is supremely complicated these days, despite the fact that production is increasing as an attempt to keep up with growing mango demand.Ĭonsumer interest continues to grow rapidly as shoppers begin to view mango consumption as ordinary -mainstream. ![]() Growers like us, El Grupo Crespo, seem to have an advantage by owning our own chain: orchards, packhouses, trucking inside Mexico, and border warehouses. The brokerage game is consequently more complicated with these irregularities in production, timing, quality, and sizing. Today the sector’s most important factor seems to be more about having actual access to fruit in whatever volume that is. Past seasons have taught most of us to approach this coming season with a hesitation to make clear cut predictions too far ahead. Sizing and volumes were incredibly hard to predict until just before harvest. Last season every single region’s varietals behaved without a pattern – other than that each varietal arrived late and without much clarity to gauge, some regions were affected more than others. These days, global warming and irregularities due to climate change have made it difficult to gauge what normal is. Within each region and up until the last several years, patterns were much more precise. This is in part due to the success those varietals have within the varying micro-climates and in part because of how varietals fare the hydro-thermic treatment required for US entry.Įach varietal has a different season within each region. Several regions eventually overlap, creating many peaks in production.Įach region generally produces specific varietals. From there, the season moves north approximately every three to four months as warmer weather travels up Mexico, through Michoacán, Nayarit, and Sinaloa. The southern regions of Oaxaca and Chiapas are always first to begin. The season generally begins in late January and runs through mid-September. ![]() Growers expect fruit to arrive on US soil around the first ten days of February. Cooperating weather has given way to an “on-time” start with the expected minimal volumes of organic Ataulfos. The Mexican mango season always opens with small volumes, and this season’s start promises much of the same. As a grown up person, he is still fond of mangoes, but he now knows when mango season comes and goes.Everybody’s favorite mango varietal- the Ataulfo, up first I used to console him by giving Amawat or Aam Papad (fruit leather). It was very difficult to convince him that its season was over. He was so fond of mangoes that he used to cry every night when the mango season was over. When my younger son was a child, he could not sleep without eating mangoes. Our little kids are busy with their mobiles and internet. Nowadays, there are no naughty children like us who throw stones or climb trees. When the mangoes fell on their own during the storm, our work became easier, as we used to go and pick up the fallen mangoes the next morning. We used to throw stones to make the raw mangoes fall and then eat them with salt and pepper. The joy of playing used to enhance from the mango blooming season itself, when the trees produced fragrant flowers in abundance. ![]() Its uses include pulp (puree), juice concentrate, ready-to-drink juice, jam, jelly, pickle, smoothie, chutney, canned slices, chips, etc.Īpart from making pickles, powders, sauces, curries, chutneys and sour snacks, raw mangoes (Keri or Amiya) are also eaten straight from the tree as a fruit snack.Īs a school going kid, I used to play dola pati with my friends in the adjacent garden. The sticky texture of mango makes it a great treat to enjoy as juices, drinks or as an ingredient in smoothies and other recipes. They are a rich source of fiber, antioxidants, and are believed to have anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties. Mangoes are an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and E, as well as magnesium and potassium. The sweet and juicy taste of ripe mangoes is relished by people of all ages. About 1500 varieties are grown in different parts of India. India is the land of this juicy fruit called the king of fruits. People are throwing mango parties in this season. All types of mangoes are now available in the market. ![]()
